New Orleans native and “Queen of Bounce,” Big Freedia started off gracing stages in her hometown. Her album “Just Be Free,”
and its popular single “Explode,” as well as her reality show “Queen of Bounce,” have gained Freedia a considerable fan base.
Freedia, who does not identify as transgender, spoke to the Advocate about her gender identity.

I’m a voice for a lot of people who really don’t have a voice. I want people to be able to identify as whomever they choose to be and feel free to be whomever they want to be.
That’s why I called my last album “Just Be Free,” meaning just be free in your own skin. Be whoever you want to be. Wear whatever you want to wear.

"My fans prefer me to be called 'she'," Freedia says from her home in New Orleans East. "It doesn't matter to me either way whether you call me 'he' or 'she'.
I’m comfortable being who I am. My pronoun is 'me'."
Big Freedia is a giant in the world of bounce, the booty-shaking sub-genre of hip-hop that started bubbling up in New Orleans in the early ’90s like a spicy gumbo,
combining raucous up-tempo rhythms, heavy bass and call-and-response chants inspired by Mardi Gras. The music was also hypersexual and at shows the audience members
were centre stage as much as the performers, bending over and wildly shaking their buttocks in a dance that became known as twerking.
These fans are predominantly female and according to Freedia that's no accident, as it's a safe space for them to express themselves.
"The women are definitely the ones who empower this music," she says. "The women help me push the boundaries when I'm up there. They protect me in many ways and I do the same for them."
All of this is a far cry from the music that surrounded young Freddie Ross, who was a choirboy with a soulful voice.
Then, in August, 2005, Katrina came to town. Freedia was evacuated and after shifting around a lot, landed in Houston.
Like many of her cohorts who were scattered by Katrina, she kept performing wherever she went. As a result, bounce bounced its way out of New Orleans and across the USA.
On her return to the city around a year later she was asked to do a weekly show at Club Caesar's. They became known as FEMA Fridays, using the acronym for Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"Every week it was like a big reunion as people started returning to the city," she recalls. "Everyone had FEMA money coming in and they were doing their thing together. Everything changed after Katrina.
It's a new New Orleans now and I think it's better. It was a wake-up call and it rebuilt and cleaned up the city. It all happened for a reason. I'm now grateful for Katrina."
She's also grateful for the surge of interest in bounce that resulted from all this. In 2010 The New York Times came to New Orleans to report on the phenomenon. In 2011 Big Freedia
and fellow bounce stars Katey Red and Sissy Nobby appeared on critically acclaimed TV series Treme. By 2013, Freedia had scored her own reality show. In 2015 she published her autobiography, Big Freedia:

And in 2016 Big Freedia got her biggest endorsement - Beyoncé used her vocals in the song Formation and at the beginning of every concert on her world tour.
"When I first heard the Beyoncé song, I freaked out," she says. "I was jumping up and down and screaming like a big old kid I was so excited. That was another
step forward, not just for me, but for the LBGTQI community."
Things took a less happy turn that year when she pleaded guilty to charges of not reporting her
income for four years while still claiming housing benefits. She was sentenced to three years probation and was ordered to return around
$US35,000 in rent, pay a $US35,000 fine and perform 100 hours of community service. In August this year the judge ended her probation one year early for good behaviour.
"It was a life lesson and it definitely taught me self-discipline," she says of the experience. "I'd never been in that position before where I was making money.
I learned that I needed to handle my business the right way and get my affairs in order."
Some might see the transition from choirboy Freddie Ross to bounce queen Big Freedia a strange one, but she doesn’t see it that way at all.
"A lot of singers come from gospel music and then go into different genres," she reasons. "Bounce happens to be mine. It's part of the culture of New Orleans.
My church people supported me when I made my transition from gospel to bounce and that made it a lot easier.
"They were supportive of me being gay too. Gay folks go to church. We pray to the Lord too. I always had support from my mother,
who was my backbone. Some members of my family weren't so happy about it and they spoke their minds and I spoke mine back.
I had to fight in the neighbourhood and at school and I had to stand up and be who I wanted to be. That's just the way it was. And here I am."
